 | BryanBryan, a 19 year old engineering student, did not want to give up his plans after losing both arms in a car accident in November 2009. His wife had just given birth to his first child. He searched for a way to obtain prostheses, but the cost was far out of reach of his family. He then learned about Protesis para la Vida, and traveled 19 hours by bus with his mother to the clinic. In April 2010 he received a below elbow prosthesis for the left and an above elbow prosthesis for the right side, and returned to Loja to his studies and his family. |
 | CarlitaCarlita, age 18 months, was born without a leg below the knee. When she came to the clinic she was very angry that these strangers kept looking at her leg. After she was fitted with her prosthesis, she immediately started standing and taking wobbly steps. Two weeks later Carlita came back and she wasn’t mad anymore. She took running lunges between her mom and whoever was holding out their arms. Carlita will need continual adjustments and new parts as she grows. |
 | MiguelTaxi driver Miguel lost his left hand in an accident. To maintain his license he must drive with two hands on the wheel, so he fashioned a prosthesis for himself from a mannequin’s hand. After using this device for 10 years, he was very happy to receive a functional prosthesis. |
 | JostinJostin, age 4, managed to do a lot with his right foot, because it was the only intact limb that he was born with. When he received a prosthesis for his left leg from Protesis para la Vida, in October 2009, he was able to walk independently within a few weeks. In January 2010 he started the process of being fitted with arms. A pair of prostheses had been donated by an older child who had outgrown them. They were refurbished with new parts purchased through donations from individuals in the US. We hope to keep Jostin updated with prostheses as he grows and changes. He will be starting school in the fall |
 | Jose MartinJose Martin, age 22, lost his leg when walking in the woods, where he accidentally set off a trip wire attached to a rifle, set up to trap deer. He received an above-knee prosthesis at Protesis para la Vida, 12 months after the accident. |
 | ArianaAriana lost her arm above the elbow when her car was sideswiped as she waved out the window, at age 2. Now six, Ariana took great pride in her new arm. As she was leaving the clinic, she insisted on wearing her prosthesis harness over her shirt where everyone could see it. |
 | GabyGaby required an above knee prosthesis after she lost her leg to bone cancer at age 16. She was able to receive the prosthesis from Protesis para la Vida 3 months after the amputation, unlike so many of our patients who wait years before receiving a prosthesis. Her father carried her into the clinic and several days later she walked out. |
 | EmersonEmerson, from Guayaquil, was only 8 months old when he lost his leg above the knee in a motorcycle accident. A relative living in Ibarra heard about Protesis para la Vida and had Emerson come by bus. Emerson received his first prosthesis here, at age 14. |
 | CarmenA huge boulder tumbled off the mountain above Carmen’s home, crashed through her roof, and landed on her bed, crushing her foot. She received a partial foot prosthesis from Protesis para la Vida that allowed her to walk comfortably. |
 | JorgeJorge is a shy 6 year old born without a left leg below the knee and with anomalies of both hands. Jorge did not have a crutch, and got around by hopping or being carried by his father. Jorge was overcome by emotion when he first tried his new leg, and could not move or speak. The next day Jorge quickly adjusted to his new prosthesis and walked out with his family. |
